摘要：The article presents the main characteristics, definition and epidemiology of dementia, history of this increasingly prevalent phenomenon in the modern medicine, in particular neuroltogy and psychiatry, and the significant economic and social burden it imposes. Furthermore, the curtrent classification of dementias is provided, followed by the modern concepts of the etiology and the most common clinical forms of the disease: Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia, and frontotemtporal dementia. The objectives of the diagnostic procedures and differential diagnosis are discussed in more detail and the importance of the differential diagnosis in the syndrome of dementia is emphatsized. Finally, the current treatment approaches and prognosis of dementias are shortly reviewed.
