摘要:The discrepant findings emerging in almost all aspects of the depression research indicate serious methodological problems in this field. The discrepancy seems to be related mainly to the patient selection criteria: subjects from different socioeconomic backgrounds and health care settings have been recruited, and inconsistent inclusion and exclusion criteria have been employed. The definition and diagnosis of stroke and poststroke depression is another issue contributing to the inconsistent literature data – stroke is not consistently diagnosed according to the consensus criteria, and there is generally a lack of uniformity in the definition of poststroke depression, with different diagnostic criteria and rating scales used for quantifying the degree of depression. Systematic literature reviews show significant variations as regards the time of the initial evaluation of the mood following stroke, which also contributes to the inconsistent findings. Variations in the study design, inadequate statistical analysis and data reporting have also been recognized as the causes of the discrepancy in the literature data relating to poststroke depression. Studies dealing with the methodological issues have defined recommendations to be followed in future research
