摘要:Status epilepticus is a common neurological emergency. The purpose of this study was to analyze clinical presentation, causes and outcome of status epilepticus. This five-year prospective study comprised all patients with status epilepticus admitted to the Department of Neurology of the University Clinical Center Banjaluka in the period 2003-2007. Demographic and clinical data were collected for all patients. A total of 54 patients with status epilepticus aged 18-90 (mean 52.5 years) were included. There were 32 males (59.3%) with mean age 57.2 years and 22 females (40.7%) with mean age 48 years. Primary generalized and partial seizures with secondary generalization were identified in 59.2% and 25.9%, respectively. Simple partial status occurred in 14.8%. A history of seizures was present in 55.5% and absent in 44.5%. The main underlying causes were noncompliance with treatment in the first group (n=11; 36.6%) and cerebrovascular disease (n=17; 70.8%) in the second group. Cerebrovascular disease was the most common cause also in the whole group (31.5%). The overall mortality was 5.5% and the deaths were associated with acute symptomatic etiology and older age (mean 76 years). Epileptic patients are at greater risk to develop status epilepticus, however patients with no prior history of epilepsy and acute neurological problems can also present this state. Cerebrovascular disease was the most common cause in the whole group as well in those with new-onset seizures. Noncompliance with treatment was the major cause in patients with preexisting epilepsy
