摘要:Based on Edward Said's Colonial Discourse Theory and his concept of Oreintalism, this paper develops a Saidian reading ofthe Orientaists' thought in their relationshipwith non-Western people. The paper attempts to decipher the common interfacebetweenDarwinism andOrientalism. Located within the postcolonial framework, thepaper methodologically tries to uncover the pervasively Western intellectual andscientificmindsetwhichisgoverned bytheOrientalistthoughtthat directsits relationwith the "Other". The Eurocentric determinism has been shaped and articulatedthrough theories such as Social Darwinism, Functional Anthropology, Modernism,Capitalism, etc., whichhascoincided and materialized in the act of colonialism, imperialism and globalization. It is to be noted that colonialism, imperialism,Orientalismare Western-based ideologies that caused the epistemological andgeopolitical drift intheworld order, and their aftermathsare still the most discussedproblematics. The present social andpolitico-cultural world is re-formulated againstand/or set in accordance with those resurrected repercussions. Among the stilldebated issues are cultural supremacy and political hegemony, and both arelegitimized and incited by the "idea" of redemption, in Conrad's words, or racialsuperiority as in Spencer's theory. This paper tries to probe into thedormantpremiseof the Orientalist/colonialist thought, andto lay barethe"idea behind it", to useConrad's words, too,in order torelate the different parts into the common whole ofWestern, hegemonic cultural and political set-up.
