摘要:Black British writingisfrequentlyconsidered to be largely constituted of realistnovels that, following in the traditionsof theWest Indiannovel, havechieflyconcerned themselveswith the expression of social identities. This status hasinformed ongoing debates within which celebratory assertions of a canon or genreare placed in contest with concerns over implied authorial limitations and literaryghettoisation. This essay seeksengage with this debate by analysing two novelsby black British writers that are written within the crime thriller genre. Insodoing,it seeks to expand the critical framework within whichblack writing inBritain can be read, by employing the theoretical language provided by structuralnarratology. In addition to this, it aims to show how the concept ofidentity, as it istraditional employed in postcolonial criticism, can also take on fresh meaningswhen placed in the context of black British crime writing.
