摘要：In today's digital world information exchange is been held electronically. So there arises a need for secure transmission of the data. Besides security there are several other factors such as transfer speed, cost, errors transmission etc. that plays a vital role in the transmission process. Image compression is a technique that is very tremendously used for the intact and efficient transfer of data. It not only reduces the size of graphic file to be transferred but at the same time reduces the storage space requirements, cost of the data transferred, and the time required for the transfer. It makes the transmission process faster, provides larger bandwidth and security against illicit use of data. This paper provides a basic introduction about image compression, image coder, various types of image compression techniques and lastly the benefits related with the image compression techniques.
