摘要：How should we understand Gandhi's commitment to non-violence. After discussing and refuting the idea that Gandhi's conception of non-violence can be treated merely as a method to stand up to aggression, its embedment in a concept of true civilization is examined. It is argued that the important nuances between the definitions of civilization in the Gujarati and the English versions of Gandhi's seminal work Hind Swaraj (1909) reveal Gandhi's conception of civilization
