摘要:Kamala Markandaya's forte is in recording and describing the inner workings of acharacter's mind and heart. Beside the sociological and psychological image of women in her novels, she also deals with the thoughts and themes of tragic waste, the despair of unfulfilled or ruined love, the agony of artistic ambition, the quest of self-realization.Markandaya's women characters approximate to conventional models of Indian womanhood. They show extraordinary endurance and strength of character and rise above passivity of mere acceptance of their lot to become individuals involved in the struggle of life. There is a clash of conformity along with a desire for autonomy. The paper aims at presenting women as tragic figures that transcend the barrier of time and still fulfil social obligations, facing both social constraints and loss of separation from the loved ones. They still remain the upholders of life and rise above all petty human trivialities. Their qualities arouse compassion as so much human potential lies wasted. Kamala Markandaya's novels are reflective of the awakened feminine sensibility. Her concerns are not caste and class problems but socio-economic problems
