摘要:This interesting, informative, and well-written series of 19 articles examines the agriculture, fishing, forestry, and mining and energy sectors in the Atlantic Region. The five introductions included-one to the book itself and one to each sector-provide not only a useful summary of the articles but also insightful historical and analytical contexts. Each section is also accompanied by a useful bibliography of further readings. Although the articles originally were published over a ]2-year period beginning in 1975, they are not out of date, either because they provide useful historical information and analyses or, sadly, because the situations they analyze have not bcen corrected. The authors make no claim to objectivity-their sympathies clearly lie with the people, not with power. They are radical in the true sense of the word, trying to get at root causes. In analyzing the political economy of the Atlantic provinces, they reveal how economic power is used to manipulate the politicians to generate giveaways and deals, done in the name of jobs and development, but which compound the dependency of the region. Many of the articles also analyze the role of the media in legitimizing the sellout of the region's people and resources.
