摘要：Voluntarismo e autonomia se encontram no cerne do conceito de esporte moderno, e é o trabalho de cientistas sociais compreender como e por que esses valores evoluíram e se difundiram. Teorias passivas são inadequadas, uma vez que não reconhecem adequadamente a agência dos praticantes. Em contraste, as principais teorias da economia são capazes de dar conta da formação dos esportes modernos e de suas associações. Para aqueles que não estão familiarizados com esse aparato teórico, este artigo se coloca como uma curta cartilha e fonte de futuras referências. Este trabalho se inicia com alguns exemplos de passividade na análise do esporte moderno na literatura já estabelecida. Em seguida, algumas características históricas da evolução dos esportes modernos são debatidas, e este relato é então finalizado dentro do quadro teórico da análise econômica mainstream
其他摘要：Voluntarism and autonomy lie at the core of the concept of modern sport, and it is the task of social scientists to understand how and why these values evolved and diffused. Passive theories are inadequate since they do not adequately acknowledge the agency of practitioners themselves. By contrast, mainstream economic theories are capable of accounting for the formation of modern sports and sporting associations. For those unfamiliar with this theoretical apparatus, this article is intended as a short primer and source of further references. At first, this paper briefly provides some examples of passivity in the analysis of modern sport in the established literature. Then some of the historical features of the evolution of modern sports are discussed, and this account is then set within the framework of a mainstream economic analysis.
