摘要：Entre 1852 e 1893 Portugal dotou-se de mais de dois mil quilómetros de caminhos-de-ferro, quealteraram a forma como se viajava no Reino. Os portugueses, que antes apenas circulavam nos rios, junto àcosta ou onde a ausência de obstáculos o permitia, passaram a dispor de um novo meio de locomo..o quelhes encurtava as distancias e aumentava o tempo disponível. Este artigo pretende, através dos discursosparlamentares coevos, dos pareceres técnicos da engenharia nacional (manuscritos do Ministério das ObrasPúblicas ou publicados nas revistas da especialidade) e da literatura da época enumerar e explicar algumasmudan.as verificadas nos comportamentos itinerários dos portugueses. 其他摘要：Between 1852 and 1893 more than two thousand kilometres of railway were built in Portugal,changing the way people travelled across the Kingdom. Before that, travel only took place by river, by seaalong the coast or by land where the lack of obstacles allowed it. This new form of transportation shorteneddistances and thus gave Portuguese travellers more time. Based on contemporary parliamentary debates, thetechnical opinions of Portuguese engineering (both manuscript in the records of the Ministry of Public Worksand published in technical journals) and contemporary fictional literature, this study aims to describe andexplain some of the changes to travelling habits in Portugal. We shall see that new habits were brought on bythe railway, as well as new concerns and new opportunities, and it quickly became a widely-used public service
