摘要:The noti on of "community" within the multicultural context of the American West has h istorically been subject to contrasting and often contradictory anal yses. Such differing appreciati ons may stem from the fact that they are culture-bound, con sciously (or not) grounded in a particular interpretive fra mework which enables community consciousness to emerge precisely in terms of what it i s not. Cultural , linguistic, religious or ethnic cohesiveness i s thus precipi tated by a real or i magi ned "other" elemen t, unknown tribe or uncharted territory, whose threatening presence indirectly fosters a desire for social harmony and group identi ty based on a developed and privileged relationship to place. The gradual imposition of the Anglo-American ideologi cal model, with all of its cultural, political, economic and ecological repercussi ons, responds no less to a communitarian aspiration,-
