摘要:Background: Each year, nearly 1.3 million peopledie as a result of a road traffic collision¡ª morethan 3500 deaths each day, moreover twenty tofifty million more people sustain non-fatal injuriesfrom a collision, and these injuries are animportant cause of disability worldwide. Roadtraffic injuries are among the three leading causesof death for young people (5 to 44 years of age). Iftimely actions are not taken, road traffic injuriesare predicted to become the fifth leading cause ofdeath in the world, resulting in an estimated 2.4million deaths each year. Considering the issue andconcern about younger age group, this study wascarried out.Objectives: To find out prevalence of major andminor Road Traffic Accidents and its relation withDriving practices among young drivers.Methodology: A Cross Sectional Study among theschool students of 11thand 12thstandard going tothe tuition classes of Ahmedabad and Vadodaracity and students of S.B.K.S. Medical College.Data was collected with the help of a Pre-designed,Pre-tested questionnaire for road traffic accidentsand driving practices. Results: Majority of driverswere in 18 to 19 years of age (49.7%), Male andfrom Vadodara city. Total Prevalence of Accidentswas 41.4%, 20.4% had major accidents and 29.2%had minor accidents. Safe Driving practices likeuse of Helmets and Seat Belt while driving wasless followed (11.5% and 40.2% respectively)while unsafe practices like use of mobile whiledriving was practiced by 42.4% of drivers and itwas related with high prevalence of RTAs. Fault ofPedestrian and Poor road condition are the majorreason of their RTAs for young drivers.Conclusion: Prevalence RTAs are high (41.4%)among young drivers and it is related with highspeed of driving, use of mobiles with driving andnot following safety measures while driving. Faultof pedestrian and poor road condition are the mainreason for the RTA for the young drivers.
