摘要:Research Question: What is the situation ofBreast feeding practices among infants living inslums of Bhavnagar city.Objective: To study the Breast feedingpractices and the influence of literacy andcultural factors on breast-feeding practices ininfants of Bhavnagar urban slums.Study Design: Community based Cross-sectional study. Setting: infants living in slumsof Bhavnagar city. Study Tools: pre testedsemistructure questionnaire.Participants: ActualStudy was conducted among 840 childrenin theage group of 0 to 5 years were selected for studyusing 30-cluster methodology.EthicalConcern: No ethical issues were involved.Inclusion Criteria: Healthy under five yearchildren. Exclusion criteria: Currently ill childStudy Period:April 2009 to June 2009.StudyVariable:Literacy, Prelacteal feeding practices,Colostrum Practices, Time of initiation, Place ofdelivery. Statistical Analysis: Chi-square testand percentages.Results:61.9% of newborns received prelactealfeed. Illiterate mother (85.2%) practices moreprelacteal feeding than literate mother (50.9%)which was statistically significant in our study(<0.01).. all home delivered infants receivedprelacteal feeding and half infant receiveprelacteal who were delivered in hospital anddifference was statistically significant in ourstudy (p<0.001). 38.1 % of newborns receivedbreast feeding within hour. 49.1% and 14.8% ofliterate and illiterate mothers respectively hadstarted breastfeeding within one hour (p<0.01).36.9% of newborns received colostrum in ourstudy. Statistically significant association foundbetween type of family and colostrum feedingpractices (p<0.05).Conclusion: Present studyshows 40% of newborns received right practicesof breast feeding
