摘要:The Integrated Child Development Scheme(ICDS), was initiated nearly 35 years ago, inOctober 1975, in response to the evident problemsof persistent hunger and malnutrition especiallyamong children. The role of Anganwadi Worker(AWW) MahilaMandal and Village HealthCommittee. To understand this changing roles, the present study was initiated with the objectiveto study the changing role of Anganwadi workerin present scenario.METHOD- The study was a cross sectional study. It was conducted at Wagodiya block of Vadodaradistrict which is situated in central Gujarat. It wasa purposive sampling and convenient selection. The Wagodiya block has 124 Anganwadis. It wasdecided to select 25% of Anganwadis from eachPHC of Wagodiya block, so that the samplerepresents all the geographic areas.RESULTS- Total 30 (25%) Anganwadi werevisited. The mean age of Anganwadi workers was33.8 years (range ¨C 20-53 years). Almost 87%Anganwadi workers were from same villagewhere the Anganwadi is located. All the AWWswere getting incentive for participation or servingin National Health Programme apart from ICDS.Almost 80% AWWs participated in otherNational Health Programmes like PPI, house tohouse survey, selection of patients for TL infamily planning programme etc. 67% AWWsworked as DOT provider for Tuberculosispatients. 33% AWWs believed that they had aload or cannot give enough time to basic activityat Anganwadi due to participation in otherNational Health Programmes.DISCUSSION - The anganwadi worker andhelper, who are the basic functionaries of theICDS, are not treated on a par with othergovernment employees, but are called "socialworkers" or "voluntary workers". They are notpaid "wages" (which would provide them withsome minimum service conditions) but only an"honorarium"2. The present study suggest theAWWs are overworked and not able to justifytheir routine work. The government healthauthorities and other authorities need to keep inmind that they have generated second similarcadre in each village that is ASHA (AccreditedSocial Health Activist) under National RuralHealth Mission (NRHM). They should be utilizedproperly. So the AWWs will cater the services asper need of community.
