摘要：T he study critically analys ed the pictures given in Englis h Step ¨C 1, a textbook by Punjab Textbook Board, L ahor e. A s ample of 340 newly admitted s tudents of Clas s ¨C I from 17 randomly selected Gover nment Primary Schools of Tehsil Multan along with their 17 teachers were involved in the study. Two surveys were conducted at differ ent stages . At initial stage, only one ques tion was asked i.e., what does the picture represent., about each and every picture given in the textbook . All poss ible immediate res pons es regarding each picture were recorded serial-wise. All those pictures which were having only one or two titles were dropped from the final sur vey s o fifty pictures out of ninety (55.56 %) basic pictures were included in the final sur vey. Permission was sought from the heads of the institutions and concer ned teachers were consulted before conducting the final surv ey. In the final survey, the concerned teachers were helpful to make each student feel at eas e to respond to the researchers. Data fr om all 340 students were collected individually by asking very simple questions . Moreov er, three s enior teachers of English from school cadre and two exper ts from the field of textbook analysis fr om the Depar tment of Education Bahauddin Zak ariya University, Multan were also consulted for their expert opinion about the s aid pictur es. It was concluded that neither the book is 'T eachers' Book ', nor the 'Students' Book ', and even not the 'Wor k Book'. It is composed of small siz ed, un-necessarily r epeated, complex, unfamiliar , and confusing pictures for rural as well as for the urban students
