This article reviews Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad’s thoughts in his book, A New Deal For Asia, written after the 1997 financial crisis. When currency speculators attacked Asian region, the Asian Economic Tigers could not face the battle and were badly bruised. The East Asian miracle was demolished. This article examines the ‘new deal’ and how Asian countries can reinstate after the financial crisis period. This article will also focus on how Dr. Mahathir looked at the global economic function for the future of global communities as one of the new deal proposed. Dr. Mahathir’s thoughts are different from other world leaders in facing the economic crisis because he believed that global reformation would help to support and strengthen domestic economy. This article also looks at Dr. Mahathir’s hopes and beliefs to make the Asian values a tool to face future challenges. If the Asian communities are consistent with these values, Dr. Mahathir’s ‘new deal’ will be able to form a world century community where all nations, people and regions have the same opportunities.
