摘要:The determinants of government responsiveness to its citizens is akey issue in political economy. Here we develop a model based onthe solution of political agency problems. Having a moreinformed an politically active electorate strengthens incentives forgovernments to be responsive. This suggests that there is a roleboth for democratic institutions and the mass media in ensuringthat the preferences of citizens are reflected in policy. The ideasbehind the model are tested on panel data from India. We showthat public food distribution and calamity relief expenditure aregreater, controlling for shocks, where governments face greaterelectoral accountability and where newspaper circulation ishighest
