摘要:Introduction: Alternative therapeutic methods are used frequently by health care professionals for pain management, part icu larly for patients whose d isease is in advanced stage. Purpose: To assess at titudes toward alternat iv e methods for pain management among patients and nurses. Results: This st udy's sample is comprised by pat ients and nurses randomly select ed fro m three general hosp itals in Athens, Greece. This is a quantitative descriptive study with the demographic factors asso ciat ion. Two questionnaires were used, which were answered u nder the principals of anonymit y and confidentialit y wit h synchronic design and survey elements torecord nurses' and patient s' knowledge and attitudeconcerning implementatio n of alternative methods for pain management. Results: Pat ients clin ic and age do no t seem to affect the implementatio n ofalternat ive methods fo r pain management. Regarding the profession, the average reported pain sco re for manual workers is 3.25 (ranged from 1 to 5), whereas, the sco re for self-emplo yed is 9.75 (ranged fro m 1 to 10). Pain intensity score decreases from 4.52 ± 3.3 to 1.92 ± 2.8 after the use of at least one alternat ive method fo r pain management (p<0.001). Only 19.7% of nurses report ed that they used alternative methods fo r pain management and 23% suggested them to patients. Less than 15% of nurses are not willing to be trained in alternative metho ds for pain management. Conclusion: These results show that pain should be managed by co mbined convent ional and alternat ive interventions and patients' o pinio n should be t aken int o account.
