Purpose of the survey. The purpose of this study was to identify health-related behaviors of young people from schools promoting and not promoting health.
Material and methods. Eight hundred third-form students from secondary schools of general education in Szczecin constituted the entity under examination. The research was conducted by means of questionnaires. Finally, 596 complete questionnaires were qualifi ed for the analysis. The x2 test was used for statistical analysis of research results.
Results. Among the surveyed, 23.83% assessed their nutrition as very good, where 17.28% were pupils from health promoting schools and 6.54% from schools not promoting health. More than half of the surveyed (56.54%) had three meals a day – 39.26% of the surveyed from health promoting schools and 17.28% from schools not promoting health. Most respondents (80.37%) demonstrate high level of physical activity – 56.38% of the surveyed from health promoting schools and 23.99% from schools not promoting health. A considerable number of respondents prefer passive form of relaxation (51.85%), and only 24.83% active relaxation. In this group, students from health promoting schools predominate (18.12%). Substances (tobacco, alcohol) were popular both among young people from schools promoting and not promoting health. Only 66.28% of the surveyed teenagers declared that they had never smoked cigarettes. Equally as often the youth experimented with alcohol. Among the respondents, 21.14% declared they had never drunk alcohol.
Conclusions. A growing tendency of pro-health over anti-health behaviors can be observed in the group of young people from health promoting schools. Some irregularities have been established concerning health-related behaviors of the surveyed teenagers, especially as nutrition, low physical activity and frequent substance use are concerned.
