Gastrostomy is a type of gastric-cutaneous fistula created in order to supply nutrients directly to the stomach. This type of nourishment is justified in the case of patients with oncologic and neurological diseases and those with maxillo-facial injuries in whom the consumption of food via the physiological route through the mouth is hindered or impossible. The observance of the principles of nourishment and proper nursing minimizes the occurrence of complications which most often develop due to the insufficient knowledge concerning the nursing care of patients fed through an intragastric tube or gastrostomy.
