In recent years, an increase is observed in the number of people with intestinal fistula (stoma) formed in consequence of various diseases. It has been estimated that currently in Poland there are approximately 20,000 patients with intestinal fistula. The creation of intestinal fistula disturbs the everyday functioning of a patient, therefore, the preparation of a patient for self-care is an important problem.
The preparation of a patient with intestinal fistula for life should be based on a model, professional and individualised procedure, and begin already at the moment of making a decision concerning surgical intervention.
The objective of the study was to recognize the opinions of patients with intestinal fistulas an element of preparation for self-care.
Material and methods. The study was conducted by the method of a diagnostic survey using a specially designed questionnaire form, and covered 160 patients with stoma formed at least two months previously.
Results. The results of the study showed that the scope of information obtained from the nurse was insufficient. Over a half of respondents (53.7%) did not acquire information concerning the possibility of occurrence of stoma complications, 74.4% - about stoma irrigation procedure, and 59.4% had no knowledge of exercises strengthening abdominal muscles. Only 6.7% of respondents performed irrigation, mainly due to irregular defecation and constipation.
