use of cellular phones by women during pregnancy may be connected with a negative influence of the waves emitted by the phones both on the pregnant woman and on the child. At present, science has not provided results allowing to identify clearly the extent to which cellular phones are harmful to human health.

Therefore, in order to evaluate the influence of cellular phones on pregnancy development, the authors made an analysis of the latter in women, depending on their use of the GSM phones during pregnancy.

The survey, conducted in 2004, in the first week after delivery, covered 114 patients of the Lublin obstetrics and gynaecology departments. Out of this population, the authors selected 38 women who did not use cellular phones during pregnancy; the women constituted the control group. 76 women who used the GMS phones during their whole pregnancy were the studied group.

The obtained results were analysed statistically. In the group of the GSM cellular phone users 23.68% pregnancy develop normally, while pregnancy developed normally in 36.85% of women who did not use cellular phones. In 55.26% of cellular phone users, pregnancy developed with complications which did not require women to be hospitalised, while in controls this was the case in 44.73%. Pathological pregnancy course, requiring hospital treatment, was found in 21.06% of women who used the GSM phones, and in 18.42% of pregnant women who did not use them. The study did not show a statistically significant relationships between pregnancy development and the use of the GSM phones by pregnant women.

Despite the grater proportion of pathological pregnancies in the group of women who used the GSM cellular phones during pregnancy, there is no significant relationship between pregnancy development and the use of the GSM cellular phones by pregnant women.

The more extensive research on pregnancy development in the group of women using cellular phones during pregnancy should be conducted.
