Low Back Pain Syndrome caused by degenerative lesions is a civilisation disease and constitutes a serious social problem. In addition, both therapeutic and social importance of that disease, is increased by the fact that young, active and working people are frequently affected.
Authors have analysed a group of 1028 surgically treated patients with the diagnosis of herniated discs of the lower lumbar spine. The group consisted of 386 women (37.5%) and 642 (62.5%) men.
The subject of analysis was the influence of the body constitution on the long-term surgery result, and thus on the possibility of returning to professional activity.
The result assessment was based on a questionnaire scale introduced in 1986 by D.J. Prolo. The height-weight Rohrer index was used to divide patients into three different body constitution types. The analysed data show, that light-built blue-collar workers and heavily-built white-collar workers assess their condition as the worst. In conclusion, in order to improve prognosis of surgical treatment of degenerative disease, it is important not only to fight overweight but to maintain physical fitness.
