Osteoporosis is the most widespread disease of the skeletal system. It is also included among the most common metabolic diseases. Being a civilization disease, it constitutes an enormous social problem, due to the high cost of its diagnostics, treatment and rehabilitation of people with motor deficits, as well as the remote consequences in other organs and systems.

The DEXA method (Dual Energy X-ray Absorbiometry) is the most common and reliable method of BMD assessment applied in the management of osteoporosis.

The aim of the paper is to present the sociodemographic characteristics of patients of a densitometric clinic in the context of their reasons for to come examination. Two fundamental questions were asked in the paper:

1) Is there a relationship between coming for densitometric examination and selected sociodemographic characteristics of patients?

2) Is there a relationship between coming for examination and the examination result?

Data were obtained by means of a diagnostic survey and analysed (N=221) with the use of structure index and Pearson’s chi2 test.

It has been established, among others, that:

• in the group of people reporting to a densitometric clinic, perimenopausal women from a big town were the most numerous;

• the most frequent reason to come for densitometric examination was pain in the skeletal system;

• there are statistically significant differences between reasons to come for densitometric examination and sociodemographic features of the subjects and the result of examination.
