摘要:It is reassuring to know that not all mathematicians share Smith's views, and there aremany examples to support Lobatchevsky's conjecture. For too long, the nature of thecompulsory mathematics curriculum in the UK allowed many pupils to becomedisengaged. We are sure that many of those who gained little from their mathematicslessons at school could relate their experience with Smith's sentiments. Fortunately,following a period of consolidation after the introduction in the UK of the GeneralCertificate of Secondary Education (GCSE), the National Curriculum and, morerecently, the National Numeracy Strategy, we believe that we have finally turned thecorner and are now heading in the right direction. We certainly have gone a long wayto ensuring that pupils appreciate the utility and relevance of mathematics, and mostpupils should be able to relate much of their mathematics in the way thatLobatchevsky envisaged
