摘要：A partir de meados da década de 1860, depois que se percebeu que o fim do tráfico atlantico de escravos africanos, em 1850, n.o seria suficiente para p.r fim à escravid.o, a elite política imperial intensificouos debates sobre a quest.o do elemento servil. O ápice deste processo foi a promulga..o da Lei do Ventre Livre, em 1871, a qual enfraqueceu sobremaneira a legitimidade social que lograva esta institui..o até ent.o. Neste sentido, o presente artigo pretende verificar o impacto deste processo no extremo sul do Império brasileiro. O foco é o município de Alegrete, situado na regi.o da Campanha, que tinha na pecuária e na condi..o fronteiri.a suas principais características.Com efeito, verificou-se que, em meio à deslegitima..o da escravid.o, a quantidade de registros de alforrias, no contexto aqui analisado, aumentou significativamente em rela..o ao período anterior à aprova..o da Lei de 1871
其他摘要：From the mid-1860s, after realized that the end of Atlantic slave trade in Africa, in 1850, would not be effectiveto end the slavery, the imperial political elite has intensified thedebateon the question of the slave element. The culmination of this process was the enactment of the Lei do Ventre Livre, in 1871, which greatly weakened the social legitimacy that hadthis institution so far. In this sense, this paper aims to investigate the impact of this process on the Brazilian Empiresouth extreme.The focus is the city of Alegrete, located inCampanhaofRio Grande do Sul, characterized by livestock production and frontier situation. Indeed, it was found that, regardlessdelegitimation of slavery, the amount of manumission records, in this context, has increased significantly, if we relate to theperiod prior to the approval of 1871Law
