摘要：Journalism as a profession in Brazil dis-cusses the professional characteristics ofJournalism in Brazil under the followingaspects: 1) formal conditions of access,2) conditions and effects of the monopolyon the journalistic activity 3) presenceof a distinct culture and ethic, based onthe notion of the journalist's social re-sponsibility and 4) characteristics of thereal community of individuals who sharethe journalistic identity. Based on thisscope, we can perceive the singularity ofthe Brazilian formal access conditions,albeit currently in transition. The uni-versity diploma for professional journal-ists, a recently eliminated mandatory re-quirement, created in the past a specificaccess condition and produced a fieldof specialized journalists with a univer-sity diploma. The journalists debate to-day about the end of their access cardand a total lack of professional regula-tion. At the same time, there is a re-duction of formal job positions, whichare more concentrated with the large me-dia groups, and worsening of workingconditions and salaries. The emergenceof other types of functions, due to newtechnological characteristics of the com-munication field, although potentially in-creasing professional possibilities, gener-ate dilemmas regarding production anddistribution of information. To these newchallenges old ones have to be added,such as the need to ethically equate thework done by press offices, as these con-sist today the majority of job positions forjournalists in the country. This work ex-pands the discussion about these charac-teristics of the journalistic profession inBrazil based on quantitative and qualita-tive dada produced by the Comprehen-sive Analysis of Brazilian Communica-tions and Telecommunications
