摘要:The ‘long wished for and well found’ (Petrie 1891, 38) rediscovery of the Egyptian-Greek city of Naukratis in 1884 by Flinders Petrie initiated a period of pioneering ‘rescue’ excavations that contributed to the development of ‘scientific’ archaeology in Egypt and to the establishment of archaeology as a discipline. Nevertheless, the work of Petrie and subsequent excavators at Naukratis/Kom Geif has left many basic questions unanswered. As part of the on-going restudy of the old excavations by the British Museum’s Naukratis project, an initial season of new fieldwork was conducted at the site in October 2012. The results of this brief season clearly demonstrate the site’s potential for further archaeological work designed to answer central questions relating to the site’s layout and historical development
