摘要：Este texto trata do desenvolvimento econômico da região de Caxias do Sul, que apresenta peculiaridades em relação ao que a literatura sobre economia regional tem relatado a partir dos anos 1980. As recentes transformações na economia internacional, comumente chamadas processo de globalização, aprofundaram as incertezas e o risco na atividade econômica. Com isso, ganha espaço a questão da especialização/diversificação industrial de regiões. A região de Caxias do Sul é apresentada como um caso em que a diversificação tem um papel importante na sustentação do crescimento regional, durante a difícil década de 1990. Embora não seja o único fator a explicar o dinamismo da região, a diversificação de gêneros industriais permite maior flexibilidade de resposta frente às adversidades de um contexto econômico instável e altamente competitivo.
其他摘要：This paper deals with the economic development of the region of Caxias do Sul, situated in the south of Brazil, which presents some peculiarities that have been deserving little attention by the newest trends and developments of the literature on regional economics. The recent international globalization process deepened the uncertainties and the risk in the economic activity therefore opening space in the economic debate for the issue of industrial specialization and/or diversification on regional bases. The region of Caxias do Sul is considered as a case in which the diversification played an important role in the regional growth, during the hard 1990s in Brazil. In spite of not being the single factor explaining the dynamism of that region, the diversification of the existent industrial branches allows greater response flexibility regarding the adversities of an instable and highly competitive economic context.
