摘要:Wi-Fi interface is known to be a prima ry energy consumer in mobile d evices, and idle listening (IL) is the dominant source of energy consumption in Wi -Fi. Most existing protocols, such as the 8 02.1 1 p ower-saving mod es (PSM), a ttem pt to red uce th e t i m e spent in IL by sleep scheduling. However, t hrough an extensive a nalysis of real -wo rl d tra ffic, we found more than 60% of energ y i s co nsumed i n IL, even wit h PSM enab led. To rem ed y t his problem, I propose "Idle Listening & Reducing Energy Consumption in Wireless Networks" that reduces the power consumption in IL, given that the time spent in IL has already been optimized by sleep sched uli ng . Observing that ra dio po wer consumption decreases proportionally to its clock-rate, "Idle Listening & Reducing Energy Consumption in Wireless Networks" adaptively down clocks the radio during IL, and reverts to full clock-rate when an incoming packet is detected or a packet has to be transmitted."Idle Listening & Reducing Energy Consumption in Wireless Networks "incorporates sampling rate i nva ri a nt d et ecti o n, ensuring accurate pack et detection and address filtering even when the receiver's sampling clock-rate is much l o wer t ha n th e si g n a l b a nd wi d t h . Fur t her, i t em p l o ys a n oppo rtunistic down-clocking mecha nism to optimize the efficiency of switching clock-rate, based on a simple interface to existing MAC-layer scheduling protocols. We have implemented "Idle Listening & Reducing Energy Consumption in Wireless Networks" on the USRP so ftware radio platfo rm. O ur experimental evaluation shows that "Idle Listening & Reducing Energy Consumption in Wireless Networks "can detect packets with close to 100% accuracy even with down-clocking by a factor of 1 6. When integrated with 8 02.1 1, " Idle Listening & Reducing Energy Consumption in Wireless Networks" can reduce energy consumption by around 44% for 92% of users in real -world
