摘要：Efficient and effective utilization o f resources are key objectives of every banker.These topics have always been importantin ban king, b ut a n umber of recent eventsare helping to bring even greater empha-sis to banking efficiency. Increasing com-peti tion for financial services, technologicalinnovation, and bank ing consolidation,fo r example, are all focusing mo re atten-tion on controlling costs in bank ing andproviding services and products efficiently.Increasing comp etition fro m nonbank institutions and from banks expandinginto new ma rkets is putting stro ng pres-sure on banks to improve their earningsand to control costs. Efficiency is clearly a critical factor in remaining competitive,and a number of recent statistical studieshave shown that the most effic ient bankshave substantial cost and competitive advantages over those with aver age or below average efficiency
