摘要：Since the mid-1980s, over 5,000 banksor more than one-third of all U.S.banks have disappeared. The changein Tenth Federal Reserve District statesis even more dramatic, with a 40 per-cent decline in the number of banksover the last dozen years.1At the sametime that the number of banks isdeclining significantly, other momen-tous changes are also taking place,including a rapid expansion in inter-state banking and branching and theemergence of electronic banking andnew product delivery systems. All ofthese changes appear even moreremarkable when cast against the pre-ceding fifty years¡ªa period duringwhich the banking population remainedvirtually constant and other bankstructural characteristics experienced,at most, a very gradual evolution
