摘要:Listeriosis is a foodborne disease that can cause severeillness manifesting as gastroenteritis or invasive disease. While it accounts for a fraction of all notified foodborneillness in New South Wales, all cases are hospitalised andoutcomes are potentially serious. Listeriosis follows inges-tion of the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes, found insoil, water and decaying vegetation, and commonly pres-ent on the surface of unwashed vegetables and in someprocessed foods. Food manufacturers are required tomanage L. monocytogenes within production facilities. The majority of infections can therefore be prevented withgood food hygiene practices, and by people at risk oflisteriosis avoiding potentially contaminated foods
