摘要：OftenitisthedutyoftheESLspeakingandlisteningteachertotailorthetexttotheirclasscultureanddemographics;thereforeitisanovelideatoproduceatextbookforspeakingskillsofaparticularEnglishlanguagelearner.WhencreatingacurriculumforESLspeakingstudents,teachersshouldconsidermanydemographicandculturalaspectsoftheirstudents(Folse,2006).RothandAbersonhaveemployedsuchanapproachforVietnameseELLsinCompellingConversations:QuestionsandQuotationsforAdvancedVietnameseEnglishLanguageLearnerswherecarefulknowledgeofVietnameseculture,customsandvalues,first -(L1)tosecond -language(L2)transferenceissues,andexpertiseinthefieldofESLspeakinghavebeenwelldocumented.CompellingConversationsisatextthatencouragesmulticulturalism,thatisflexibleenoughtouseforallagesofadvancedEnglishlanguagelearners,andthatgivesapersonallyrelevant,tailoredexperienceforadvancedVietnameseELLstoformulatetheiropinionsinanticipationofpresentandfuturecommunicationswithEnglishspeakers
