摘要：Since the British founded Singaporein 1819 the city has been a trans-portation hub and communicationcentre. After Independence (1965),export-led industrialization and a high-technology service industry have diver-sified the economy. The ever-expandingeconomy and growing population (2.7million people in 1990) of the limitedisland territory (roughly 600 square km)have demanded innovative measures.Land reclamation (taken up since the1960s) and the construction of high-risehousing and skyscraper offices couldreduce the pressure on land for only alimited amount of time
