摘要:Former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir has been oneof the key players defining the relationship betweenmodernity and Islam. In the public opening lecture of theworkshop, Omar Farouk Bajunid (Hiroshima) addressed thecharacteristics of Mahathirism, relating the former primeminister's biography to the political ideology that shapedpostcolonial Malaysia. In the early 1970s, Mahathir begancriticizing the cultural dependency and colonial residue ofthe 'Look West' perspective. His 'Look East' campaign wasdesigned to bestow recognition to the Malays and to Islam.Although he had to rely on 'Malayness' in shaping Malaynationalism, Mahathir stressed the need for competitivenesswithin global capitalism. However, he always gave way topolitical protection of Malay communities and Malay tradi-tions in the economic sphere and in cultural discourse. Final-ly, he was a ruthless self-made man, which in a way contra-dicted his call for the upholding of Islamic values.
