摘要：We can start with the observablefact that there is and has beenonly one human species, no matterhow infinitely diverse its specimensacross space and time. All have a capac-ity to reason as well as a capacity to feela range of emotions. And every humansociety, in trying to ascertain what isgood for itself, finds need to reasontogether about how its members maybest survive, grow, reproduce and flour-ish. This process of common reasoningand reflection requires freedom ofinquiry and expression of differentpoints of view. The lone voice in dissentneeds to be heard, at least not sup-pressed in case it is the right voicecounselling against a course that maylead to catastrophe for all. To reasontogether implies a true or right answerexists to be found; truth seekingrequires freedom as its logical corollary
