摘要:From the conservation point of viewthe protection of a large area hasadvantages. Such areas harbour a mul-titude of ecosystems containing a highdegree of biodiversity. This varietymakes it possible to acquire a high polit-ical profile, offering an attractive optionfor potential donors including thosefrom the private sector. The recentlylaunched WWF campaign for the Heartof Borneo is one of the major conserva-tion initiatives to protect large areas withhigh biodiversity. The proposed area cov-ers about 220,000 square kilometres inIndonesia, the Malaysian states ofSarawak and Sabah, and a small part ofBrunei. Other large-scale examples arethe Guyana Shield in the northern partof South America, the massive rainfor-est area in the Congo Basin in CentralAfrica and the Sulu-Sulawesi MarineEcoregion between Indonesia, thePhilippines and Sabah. All of themoccupy large transnational areas and tryto connect a number of smaller protect-ed areas
