摘要:This paper tracks the processes through which Australia is constituted as an authoritative regional power within the Asia-Pacific, and in concurrence, how Australian peoples are cited as benevole nt 'neighbours' in relation to the Philippines and Filipinos. I focus on two bilateral projects: the General Agreement on Development Cooperation (GADC) and The Philippines: Be yond the Crisis study. Through this focus, I investigate the triumphalist narrativising of the Australian nation/self that shifts the focus from neo-colonising initiatives to a celebration of Australianness. This paper thus se eks to expose the underbelly of c onspicuous compassion that governmental tracts deploy.
