摘要:RacialIndigestionpresents an argument for the ways in which food and eating have informed the political and racial identities of 19thcentury America. Tompkins weaves together images and ideas from a diverse range of different 19thcentury cultural texts to produce a narrative of how the literal, metaphorical and metonymical ways that eating, and its accompanying indigestion, produces a racialised, embodied dialogic between self and other. It is this tension and terror between the eater and the eaten that is a way of reflecting America's racial politics in this era, particularly in its threat to the fantasy of the autonomous and 'free' liberal individual
