  • 摘要:The concept 'early modern' was origi-nally coined in the 1940s to refer to a period in European history from about 1500 to 1750 or 1789. It became widely accepted by the 1970s in English and ot he r Germanic la nguage s (includ -ing Dutch). The term is contradictory because historians first identified the years around 1500 as the rise of 'moder-nity', and only later applied the term to the world following the French and Industrial Revolutions. The problem became still more acute when the term was e xte nded beyond Europe to Japan, China, India and so on, a move to combat Eurocentrism which has come to appear Eurocentric. What dates can possibly mark the beginning and end of an early modern period in world history
