The evaluation of the growth inhibition of Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. vesicatoria by plant extracts was carried out both in vitro and in the greenhouse, on bacterial spot in Capsicum annuum. Extracts from the leaves of Piper umbellatum, Alpinia purpurata, and Hampea appendiculata were evaluated. At a concentration of 200 mg/L, only P. umbellatum showed inhibition (18 %) compared to a positive control. The active crude extract was partitioned into chloroform, aqueous, and ethyl acetate fractions. At a 200 mg/L concentration, the chloroform fraction showed 48 % inhibition, the aqueous fraction and the ethyl acetate fraction did not show inhibition, compared to a positive control. The crude extract and the chloroform fraction were evaluated under greenhouse conditions at a 250 mg/L concentration. Cupravit® and distilled water were used as positive and negative control, respectively. No significant differences were found between the treatments in the quantification of the infection percentage of leaves, showing initial symptoms.
