摘要:This study attempted to identify, describe and compare the sources and levels of stress a s well as thecoping stra tegies a mong te achers in four ma instre am schools (n=40; ma les=20; fema le s=20) and thre e S pe cia lN eeds Educa tion schools ( n=40 ; ma les=20=; females=20) in the Mutare Urba n distr ict of E du cation in E aster nZimbabwe. The seven schools were conveniently selected. A compara tive survey design was used. The re spondentswere requested to c omplete a stress dia gnostic questionnaire. Respondents were a lso asked to report on how theycoped with stress and what system changes in the Ministry of Education, Sport, Arts and Culture in Zimbabwe couldprevent or a meliorate their stress. Cross ta bu la tions wer e used. T he study revealed that both groups of tea cherswere stre ssed by perceive d lac k of government suppor t, lack of resources and heavy workloa d, and time spent onindividual pupils for those in Specia l N eeds Educa tion. Stress le vels for the tea chers were in gener al eleva ted butthose of women both in the ma instrea m and in Specia l Nee ds E duc ation wer e more eleva ted than those of theirmale counterpa rts. Main stress management methods included sha ring problems with colleagues, physica l exercise,cheering with family a nd friends. Suggested system-wide improvements to reduce stress included provision of moreresour ces, reduction of class size and better remuner ation
