摘要:Composting of organic solid waste materials has recently gained attention as an economically feasible waste management option in Nigeria and the resulting products are useful for land applications. Humic substances, which are inherent in these products and known to play crucial role in complexation, transportation and cycling of trace elements, via leaching process, has the potential of transfer to the surrounding aquatic ecosystem. Arising from acute scarcity of data on toxicological influence of the compost derived humic acid (HA) in the country, this study evaluated its hepatoxic potential on catfish (Clarias gariepinus), exposed to different concentrations (0, 100, 250, 500 and 1000 mgL1HA) in controlled water culture for 45 days. Three prognostic markers of liver disease: albumin (ALB), aspartate aminotranferase (AST) and alanine amino transferase (ALT) were determined using standard techniques. Correlations gave negative relationships for HA concentration and ALB (r = 0.323; p > 0) and AST (r = 0.459; p > 0.10) but positive for ALT (r = 0.819; p = 0.181). Relative to the control, results on the changes in ALT (109 to 168% increase) and ALB (3.62 to 51.04% reduction) in the test group were predictive of hepatic dysfunction but in terms of AST (34.68 to 67.17% reduction), there was no induced hepatoxicity
