  • 摘要:The aim of this study was to determine the organization, status and living conditions of the pupils’ dorms in the People’s Republic of Croatia in the immediate post-war period and the newly established communist government, as well as the number of dorms and their residents. The paper was mainly written through the research of the unpublished archival records, newspapers and the available literature. The campaign of mass literacy, education and the rapid industrialization of the country with the aim of faster development caused a sharp rise in the number of schools and pupils in all parts of the People’s Republic of Croatia. Thus it produced the establishment of the large number of pupils’ dorms as the educational institutions for children who went to schools outside their places of residence. Although the pupils’ dorms were founded in good faith, and their functioning was designed in great detail, the purpose for their work could not have been completed to the extent it was necessary for several reasons. Primarily, those were the financial reasons – a constant lack of money for the quality equipment, supply and functioning of the dorms, and then there was also the chronic missing of well-trained and skilled personnel. Besides, depending on the jurisdiction of the government or local authorities on the certain type of pupils’ dorms, there was a huge difference in their work. Despite the Government’s efforts to improve the situation on the ground by issuing the regulations and guidelines on the work of pupils’ dorms, there were no significant improvements, and the living conditions in most dorms still remained below the acceptable level.
