摘要:The past decade has seen a marked increase in the research and diagnosis of bipolardisorder (BD) in children and adolescents. Controversies regarding the diagnosis ofpaediatric bipolar disorder have also risen. What lacked was a consensus about thediagnostic guidelines of childhood bipolar disorder. While American Association ofChild and Adolescent Psychiatrists (AACAP) practice parameter considered irritability tobe a key diagnostic criterion [1], NICE guidelines disagreed [2]. Concerns have beenraised about diagnosing youth with emotional and behavioural symptoms without classicepisodic adult BD as paediatric BD [3, 4].Children with chronic irritability and explosiveanger outbursts causing impairment were 'diagnostically homeless' under currentclassification systems. But labelling them as BD exposes them to medications of doubtfulefficacy and their side effects as well. With the hope to solve these controversies, newdiagnostic entity of 'Dysruptive mood dysregulation disorder' has been introduced inDSM-5 to cover those children with chronic irritability but not fulfilling the criteria forclassic Bipolar disorder
