The new regulations over media adopted in various countries in the region are the complement to an untold discussion about the function of media, driven by civil society and by active government intervention. The axis of this intervention changes part of the regulatory story of Latin American media, and places in the antipodes of the relaxation of norms over this sector that is fashionable in the central countries. In turn, the technological convergence between audiovisual media, telecommunications, and internet attracts new actors to the discussion and impacts in the mediation effort which journalistic businesses traditionally exercise.
