El artículo plantea que el nuevo momento político que vive Chile se ha puesto de manifiesto a raíz de las pasadas elecciones presidenciales de diciembre de 1999. Si bien la derecha, por primera vez unida desde 1989, hizo su mejor elección desde 1938, es un error pensar que el electorado ha dejado de lado sus convicciones sociopolíticas. Al contrario, allí residió la fortaleza de la candidatura de Ricardo Lagos. Este nuevo momento político incluye múltiples necesidades, entre ellas una nueva estructura institucional que deje atrás los mecanismos heredados de la dictadura, y un paso adelante en el proceso de institucionalización de la Concertación.

This article argues that the recent December 1999 Presidential elections have opened out a new political agenda. While it is true that the Right, united foro the first time since 1989, made its best showing since 1938, it must not be assumed that the electorate has abandoned its inherited sociopolitical convictions. Indeed it was precisely these that gave such strength to Ricardo Lagos' candidacy. Now there are pressing initiatives to be taken, amongst them the elimination of what remains of the institutional heritage of the dictatorship period and a new advance in the institutionalization of the Concertación alliance.
