After fifteen months in power, President Chávez continues to enjoy high levels of popular support. Nevertheless, the multiple elections to be celebrated in May, in which he will probably be confirmed in the Presidency, are likely to prove more difficult for the Chávez movement than had been anticipated. Indeed the official aim of consolidating its hegemony appears seriously threatened. At the same time, if it may well be true that in the political sphere, the government has achieved almost all its objectives up to the moment, there is a serious economic and social deterioration and, as a result, popular backing for Chávez will undoubtedly be put to the test.
